Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive treatment for injury and exercise recovery that uses low-level electromagnetic fields to support healing and help reduce pain. It is offered at our Irvine clinic.

What is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy?

PEMF therapy uses a device that sends low-level, pulsed electromagnetic fields into the body. The fields are thought to interact with cells and tissues and may help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support healing.

At KOH Physical Therapy Lab, PEMF is available at the Irvine clinic and is used as one part of an individualized plan that usually combines hands-on care with exercise. Clients at our Long Beach clinic who may benefit from it are referred to Irvine.

Where it is offered: Offered at our Irvine clinic only. Long Beach clients who need this treatment are referred to Irvine.

Benefits

Benefits of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy

  • May help reduce pain as part of a broader treatment plan.
  • May help with muscle fatigue after exercise by supporting blood flow and oxygen delivery to the muscles.
  • May support recovery from injury by helping reduce inflammation and improve circulation.
  • May help improve range of motion when pain and inflammation are limiting movement.
  • Supports general relaxation; many people find sessions relaxing.

Who it is for

Who it may be right for

  • People recovering from an injury who want added support alongside their rehab.
  • Active people and athletes looking for help with exercise recovery and muscle fatigue.
  • People with pain or inflammation that is limiting their movement.

The technique

How does PEMF therapy work?

PEMF therapy works by stimulating the body's cells and tissues. The electromagnetic fields pass into the body and are thought to start a series of biochemical reactions that support healing and help reduce pain.

The small currents PEMF creates in tissue are similar to the natural electrical activity produced in bone when you move, which may help improve circulation and reduce inflammation.

Research

Does PEMF therapy really work?

There is scientific evidence that PEMF can help with some conditions, including pain and inflammation, and research is ongoing. PEMF devices are also used in medicine to help stimulate bone healing.

Results vary from person to person, so your physical therapist evaluates your condition first and uses PEMF as one part of your plan.

Safety

What are the risks of PEMF therapy?

The risks of PEMF therapy are very low. Some people notice a mild headache or nausea, which usually passes on its own. Let your therapist know how you feel.

Your therapist screens you before treatment to make sure PEMF is appropriate.

PEMF is not used for:

  • People with pacemakers or other electrical implants, because the fields can interfere with how these devices work
  • Pregnancy, because its safety during pregnancy has not been established
  • People with active bleeding, because the fields can slow blood clotting
  • People with certain medical conditions, without first talking with their doctor

FAQ

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy questions

How long does a PEMF session last?
It depends on the condition being treated, but most PEMF sessions last 15 to 30 minutes.
How many PEMF sessions will I need?
It varies with the condition being treated. Many people have around 10 to 15 sessions; your therapist will discuss a plan with you.
Is PEMF therapy covered by insurance?
Coverage varies. Some insurance plans may cover PEMF when it is prescribed by a doctor, but many do not. Text or call and we will explain your options.
Who should not use PEMF?
PEMF is not used for people with pacemakers or other electrical implants, during pregnancy, or with active bleeding. If you have a medical condition, talk with your doctor first. You are screened before treatment.
Is PEMF the same as TENS?
No. Both are non-invasive treatments used for pain, but they work differently. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) uses electrical currents on the skin to stimulate nerves and block pain signals. PEMF uses electromagnetic fields aimed at the cells and tissues themselves, to support healing and reduce pain.
Where is PEMF offered?
At our Irvine clinic, 9080 Irvine Center Dr., Irvine, CA 92618. Long Beach clients who may benefit are referred to Irvine.
